When you get established and you start to delve into online writing on a more regular basis, you will find yourself working for more clients as you go along. But this also means you have to be prepared to work in more than just your ideal surroundings. You might be lucky enough to have a dedicated room for an office that you can write in. But is that the only place you can write in? Do you find it difficult to concentrate if you are sitting anywhere else? And how do you manage if your peace is disturbed by other people in the household? If you are going to be able to consistently complete client work to a high standard you need to be able to work even when there are distractions. Obviously sometimes it simply can’t work like that; for example if you were having building work done you would ideally fit your commitments around that work instead of trying to carry on regardless. But you should always try to get into the habit of having more than one spot to write in. This is easier if you have a laptop with wifi access because you can go wherever you have a signal.I make the most of this during the summer, when I can sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. I set myself up with my laptop on the bistro table underneath a gazebo, and complete my client work just as I would if I was sitting at my normal desktop computer. Online writing has never been so easy in this respect!I have also found that being able to work in more places can actually help with your productivity. Once you get over the novelty of working in different places, you will actually be able to benefit from it. If you are sitting in your usual place and feeling a bit sluggish, why not just get up and transfer yourself into another room? Obviously you will need a laptop for this to work, but even then you might find a quick fifteen minute break with a notepad and pen is enough to get you out of that dull frame of mind and back into a pro-active mood again. The point is that the more versatile you can be with where and when you work, the more freedom you will have to enjoy planning your freelance writing career as you see fit. And since going freelance is all about working for yourself instead of for someone else, isn’t it about time you unchained yourself from working in the exact same spot every time you tackle some online writing?
